4 dead, 17 injured in fiery I-96 crash in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Four people are dead and more than a dozen are injured after a fiery crash in Michigan late Saturday night.

The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. on I-96 near Webberville, which is about 25 miles southeast of Lansing. Michigan State Police troopers were already in the area, assisting with traffic as a DTE Energy crew worked to string power lines across the interstate.

A semi-truck driver was reportedly unable to stop as they neared backed-up traffic by an overpass, causing the truck to collide with several vehicles and catch fire, Michigan State Police said 15 vehicles were involved in the crash.

Police had stopped traffic, but troopers had just reopened the interstate when the crash happened.

Seventeen people, all “vehicle occupants,” were taken to Lansing hospitals for serious injuries, Michigan State Police said early Sunday. Four people are confirmed dead.

Michigan State Police were investigating the crash while the state’s Department of Transportation was set to inspect the overpass.
