ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Allergies are a nuisance and humans are not the only ones impacted. The ABQ BioPark gave a look at how they protect their animals from the seasonal pollen, specifically their 38-year-old southern white rhino named Bertha.
Zookeepers said allergies caused Bertha’s eyes to water which attracted flies and caused a host of health issues. To keep her safe, Bertha now dons a fly mask to keep insects away. They said it took her a while to get used to. The zoo said the flies caused Bertha to develop ulcers around her eyes but the mask is doing wonders.
