UNM falls to Auburn, drops to 0-3

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It was another outing where the UNM football team showed promise, but ended the night with a loss. On the road against Auburn, the Lobos fell 45-19.

The game started out solid for the Lobos offense. UNM scored on each of its first two possessions to open the game and hung around with the Tigers for much of the first half. UNM trailed by four at halftime, 17-13.

In the second half, the Lobos offense continued to move the ball, however points were harder to come by. Penalties were a constant theme, as the Lobos ended the game with 16 penalties for 112 yards.

“The first half went much more according to plan, made enough stops, turnovers, and two of their possessions were short field scores with one big play,” said UNM head coach Bronco Mendenhall. “That was more of what we hoped the second half would be like as well, but we didn’t have nearly as much success, consistency wise defensively in the second half making the stopes we needed to.”

In total, the Lobos racked up 448 yards of total offense. 291 yards came through the air and 157 on the ground.

Quarterback Devon Dampier ended his night 22-44 for 291 yards, 1 touchdown and two interceptions. Wide receiver Ryan Davis had his best game as a Lobo and recorded 6 catches for 100 yards. Eli Sanders led the team on the ground with 72 yards on 7 carries. UNM did not give up a sack for the third straight game.

With the loss, UNM now sits at 0-3 on the season. The team now returns to Albuquerque for a game against Fresno State on Saturday, September 21. That game will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on TruTV and MAX.
