SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The 100th Burning of Zozobra will take place at Fort Marcy Park on Friday, Aug. 30. With 65,000 people expected to attend the nearly sold out event, the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe has stepped up security.
“So one of the things that we’ve done this year is we’ve added multiple rings of security. Some of them will be unnoticeable to the attendees, others will be. Attendees will get checked almost two or three times by the time that they have entered the event. That means you’re going to get wanded, you’re going to go through a metal detector,” said Raymond Sandoval, Zozobra Event Chairman for the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe.

Those who go to the event are asked to leave bags, purses, and backpacks at home. If you do bring a bag, it must be a clear bag and be an approved size. People are also not allowed to bring sealed or reusable water bottles. “We have free water on site. It’s filtered, it’s cold, and you’ll have a cool little Zozobra commemorative cup to take with you,” said Sandoval.
If you bring a prohibited item, there are lockers to rent.
Sandoval recommended that people get there early and give themselves enough time to get through security. All attendees must be in the venue by 8:45 p.m. before the gates are closed.
The Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe has been planning the centennial celebration for the last ten years. The event is expected to have several surprises and new entertainment including a drone show and a larger fireworks display.
“Let’s burn some gloom. I know we all have some. And let’s celebrate together as a community,” Sandoval said.
