Temperatures cool as widespread rain returns

Temperatures remain very hot today for Eastern New Mexico. Rain returns to Central New Mexico later this afternoon.

Eastern and Southeastern New Mexico’s temperatures are continuing to climb today. Most of the region is in the triple digits today. Cities like Roswell even have the opportunity to break record high temperatures. Due to the extreme heat the National Weather Service has issued Heat Advisories for portions of Eastern New Mexico. This advisory will be in place until 8:00 p.m. August 22nd.

Showers are already popping up at 12:00 p.m. around the mountains. More rain will be arriving this evening for northern, western, and central New Mexico. This rain marks the start of a several day stretch of widespread rain. The high pressure that was situated over New Mexico is finally relocating to Texas this afternoon. This will allow for more moisture to be funneled into the state tomorrow and through the weekend. The only exception to the widespread rain will be Southeast New Mexico.

As the rain rolls over the state temperatures will begin to cool off as well. Areas in Central and Northern New Mexico will return to seasonable highs in the 80’s. The southeast will remain hot due to the lack of rainfall and proximity to the high pressure.
