Hot afternoon and rain chances increasing later in the week

Spotty storms stay to the northern and western regions of New Mexico today. Temperatures are hotter today than yesterday.

Temperatures across the state today are heating up. Most regions are in the upper 90’s or triple digits. Due to this extreme heat the NWS has issued Heat Advisories for the Middle Rio Grande Valley and Chaves County until 8:00 p.m. on August 20th. The Middle Rio Grande Valley including the Metro could see 100 Degree Temperatures. Chaves County could see temperatures as high as 104 Degrees.

Rain chances for today and tomorrow will be isolated to the north and west. This is because of a high pressure system located over New Mexico. By Thursday, the high moves over Texas causing rain chances to increase across the state. Widespread rain will be see on Friday through the weekend. This rain will also allow temperatures to cool off a bit.

Sadly, southeast New Mexico will likely miss out on the widespread rain. Their temperatures will stay hot.
