High schoolers touring FSU when shooting broke out, principal says

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — Four high school students were on a college tour at Florida State University Thursday when an active shooter situation unfolded, officials confirmed.

Lake Wales High School officials said all four students and the staff member accompanying them were safe from the shooting. Their safety was verified with their parents, the high school’s principal said in a statement Thursday.

Once shots broke out, the university quickly relocated the touring students and their chaperone to a secure area, where they sought shelter. Authorities said they were cleared to leave the campus by 3:30 p.m.

Tallahassee police said two people were killed and six were injured in the shooting, with multiple victims in serious condition. The suspected shooter was also hospitalized after being shot by officers after they said he refused to comply with their commands.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the entire FSU family during this tragic time,” said Lake Wales High School Principal Anuj Saran.
