​In Loving Memory of Doris Frances York 

Doris Frances York, 90, of Arkansas City, KS, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 202,5 at the Kansas Veterans Home of Winfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 22, 202,5, at the 1st Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Interment will follow at Parker Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm Monday, April 21, 2025, at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Arkansas City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cowley County Humane Society, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley family Funeral Home.

Doris was born on October 19, 1934, in Kosciusko, MS, to T.W. and Ada (Weeks) Gilbert. She graduated from Kosciusko High School and was united in marriage to John A. York on April 5, 1953. They were married in Kosciusko, MS, and later made their home in  Barstow, CA, before moving to Arkansas City. When her husband returned home from the Korean War with tuberculosis, Doris worked as a waitress at Diebel’s restaurant in Arkansas City and worked hard to sustain her family while John recovered. They later moved to Raton, NM, before finally settling in Arkansas City again. Doris enjoyed sewing and making children’s clothing, knitting and crocheting, gardening, traveling in the RV, enjoying the outdoors and spending time fishing with her husband. Doris was a devoted Christian and was a member of the 1st Southern Baptist Church. Most of all, she loved her family and took pride in raising them.

Doris is survived by her children Glen York(Linda) of Paris, TX, Rick York (Kathy) of Arkansas City, KS, and Diane Herren of Arkansas City, grandchildren: John York (Vicki), Jeff  York (Tisha), David York, and Dallas Herren, as well as numerous great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandson Glen “Skippy” York, several siblings, and son-in-law David Herren.
