13-year-old pleads guilty to intentionally hitting, killing Albuquerque bicyclist

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – One of three teens accused of intentionally crashing a stolen car into a 63-year-old Albuquerque man in 2024 pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Thursday.

APD arrested 13-year-old Johnathan Overbay, 15-year-old William Garcia, and 11-year-old Messiah Hayes for the death of Scott Habermehl, who was hit while riding his bicycle to work at Sandia National Laboratories on May 29, 2024.

Overbay, who entered the plea Thursday, was 12 years old at the time of the crime and was behind the wheel of the car when it hit Habermehl on Moon Street and Aspen Avenue, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

He will remain incarcerated until he is 21 years old.

The cases involving the other juveniles are still pending.
