TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — President Donald Trump gave remarks on the shooting at Florida State University Thursday.
“I’ve been briefed on the Florida State University, Tallahassee, active shooting. I guess it’s an active shooter,” the president said, during an Oval Office meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday.
“Fully briefed as to where we are right now,” he added. “It’s a shame. Horrible thing. Horrible that things like this take place. And we’ll have more to say about it later,” Trump said.
At least six people were transported for treatment at a Tallahassee hospital after an active shooter alert was issued at FSU on Thursday.
A suspect was reportedly taken into custody on Thursday afternoon, according to a source for the Associated Press.
FSU first issued an active shooter alert midday on Thursday, after which ambulances, fire trucks and patrol vehicles from multiple law enforcement agencies raced toward the campus that sits just west of Florida’s state capital. The shooting was reported in the school’s student union, with officials telling students and those in the immediate area of the campus to shelter in place.
Hundreds of students streamed away from the direction of the student union. Students were glued to their phones, some visibly emotional, while others hugged each other. Dozens gathered near the music school waiting for news.
Other government officials have also expressed their support for the victims amid an investigation.
“Our prayers are with our FSU family, and state law enforcement is actively responding,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said.
“My office has already been in contact with school leadership about the tragic reporting on FSU’s campus,” added Sen. Ashley Moody. “I am praying for the safety of the students, faculty and all first responders involved.”
