ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico United was one minute away from advancing to the next round of the US Open Cup. 30 minutes and a penalty shootout later, the club was eliminated from the tournament.
In its match against El Paso Locomotive FC, United had a 2-1 lead in stoppage time. With the final whistle moments away, El Paso scored the equalizer and sent the match to extra time. El Paso then went on to win in PKs, 4-1.
The loss does not impact New Mexico’s standings inside the USL. Currently, the club is in a tie for second with 12 points and only one point off the lead.
United now returns to USL action. Up next is a home match against Western Conference leading Monterey Bey next Wednesday.
