ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller is pushing back against President Donald Trump’s latest executive order on coal production. During the Electrify New Mexico conference Friday morning, the mayor signed his own executive order to speed up the transition away from fossil fuels at city buildings. That includes fully converting to renewable energy for all city operations by the end of the year.
Mayor Keller said his order is a response to one that President Trump signed this week aimed at lifting barriers on coal leasing and allowing some power plants to remain in operation, even though they were set to close. “We want to make sure we are responding in kind, essentially. So, you know, if he can sign an executive order, so can we,” said Mayor Keller.
The city is looking to cut carbon emissions in half by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
