New Mexico United prepares for third annual ‘foot golf’ fundraiser tournament

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –Fusing the world of soccer with golf, New Mexico United is now looking for fans to hit the links next month as part of their biggest fundraiser of the year for a wide range of community projects. “It’s the best golf course in the state, it’s the best green space in the state. It’s just an absolute blast and we love it,” said David Wiese-Carl, New Mexico United vice president.

From the flat soccer pitch to rolling slopes of the golf course, one of Albuquerque’s loudest sports will hit Sandia’s quiet links next month. On May 17, those at Sandia Golf Club will be leaving the sticks behind and trading them in for a soccer ball all for a good cause.

United’s annual Four-Man Scramble foot golf tournament is returning for a third year, where instead of using golf clubs, tourney-goers will use their feet to kick a soccer ball into golf holes that are quadruple in size. “Avoid the water, avoid the sand, just like golf. Try and get in the hole as many and as few shots as possible, said Weise-Carl.

The invitation is open to all. “It’s a pretty accessible game. If you can kick a soccer ball, even if you can’t kick it well, because I certainly can, you can play footgolf,” said Weise-Carl.

The money raised by the tournament will go to Somos Unidos Foundation, which, in part, helps pay for New Mexico kids to play in local soccer leagues. “I think New Mexicans are often told that they’re not good enough in a lot of different ways. Well, they’re good enough at soccer. They’re good enough to achieve. They’re good enough to represent their state on a real positive level. And we have a responsibility and an opportunity to provide that platform for them, and we’re proud of that,” said Weise-Carl.

The cost for a group is $500, which comes with a golf cart rental, United swag, and food. The tournament will be on May 17. They will have a watch party after for the United game or you can catch the game on New Mexico 50 or at KRQE.com.
