Bill would fund study looking at bringing lowrider museum to Española

ESPAÑOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – A bill making its way through the Roundhouse is hoping to bring a lowrider museum to northern New Mexico. The bill, sponsored by Representative Susan Herrera, would provide $100,000 during fiscal years 2026 and 2027 to do a study establishing a low rider museum in Española.

The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs would work with the Higher Education Department to complete the study. Herrera said the bill is important to the culture of her district. “I am in the heart of lowrider country and I always smile because everybody always has two cars sitting out in their yard, one is the car they are going to fix up and the other car for parts. I mean it is kind of the family dream to get to that lowrider one day and to build the best car you can,” said Rep. Herrera (D-Embudo).

The bill has cleared one committee so far and now heads to the House Appropriations and Finance Committee.
