Girls 5A quarterfinal – Cinderella Cavegirls stun Scorpions

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The dance continues for the Carlsbad Cavegirls. The No. 12 seed came to the Pit thanks to a win over No. 5 Albuquerque High last week, and the hot streak stayed alive on Tuesday night. In its quarterfinal round against No. 4 Farmington, Carlsbad pulled off a 60-56 upset win.

Carlsbad led nearly wire to wire. The Cavegirls jumped out to a big lead thanks to stellar shooting from beyond the arc as the team began 4-4 from three-point range.

The Scorpions were able to chip away at the Carlsbad lead. Farmington took its first lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Abbey Dugan played a key role in the Cavegirls’ ability to finish down the stretch. The Carlsbad senior (and future UNM soccer player) made multiple clutch plays on all ends of the floor in the final moments. She ended the night with a game-high 31 points and 9 rebounds.

Carlsbad is now on to the semi-finals and will face No. 1 Hobbs. That game will take place on Thursday at 1:15 p.m.
