AFR rescues injured hiker in the Foothills

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Fire Rescue conducted a search and rescue operation for an injured hiker on Sunday. AFR was called out to the Elena Gallegos Trail Head shortly after 1 p.m., where a hiker was injured about two miles up on the Pino Trail. With the help of the Albuquerque Police Department and Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, it took rescuers around three hours to safely get the hiker to an ambulance.

AFR said with the weather heating up and more people on the trails, they expect more of these calls to be taking place. “These are, I don’t want to say, routine, but they are common responses for us. We only expect to see more of them as the weather warms up, as people start to enjoy our foothills here. So we will see what the spring runoff is and see if we will have the river rescues as well,” said Lt. Jason Fedjer.

AFR said to take safety precautions when out hiking, like taking a partner, and let another person know where you are going.
