To get your refund status, you also might need to provide different information depending on which state you live in. For example, in California, you need your Social Security number, ZIP code, the exact amount of your refund and the numbers in your mailing address.

However, in Missouri, you will only need your Social Security number, your filing status and your anticipated refund (or balance due).

When will I get my federal tax refund?

If you want to check the status of your federal refund, you can do so on with the IRS’ Where’s My Refund? tool.

The IRS will normally issue refunds within 21 days for those who file electronically and choose direct deposit. Paper returns will take about six to eight weeks from when the IRS receives your return, so it might be better to file electronically and choose direct deposit when you can.

2025 Credit Karma survey found that 37% of U.S. taxpayers rely on their tax refunds to make ends meet. This number rises to 50% when looking at millennials.
