The calm before the next storm

Winds have calmed down across New Mexico this afternoon as temperatures marginally warm up. But this calm weather won’t be lasting for very long.

A ridge of high pressure is in place over New Mexico this afternoon. The ridge is bringing marginally warmer temperatures across the state. The ridging has also calmed down the strong wind gusts seen over the past few days. This afternoon, winds are only expected to be locally breezy in the southeast.

Another storm system is making its way towards New Mexico this afternoon. The storm will bring precipitation as soon as tonight. Light mountain snow and valley rain can be seen overnight and through Thursday afternoon.

Along with the incoming precipitation, the next storm system will be bringing back the incredibly strong wind gusts on Thursday. Gusts upwards of 70 mph are possible across central and eastern New Mexico. These increased winds will lead to blowing dust and possible dust storms in these areas. Additionally, the fire threat will increase on Thursday as well. The critical area for fire weather will be across eastern and southeastern New Mexico tomorrow.

Friday and Saturday will showcase more widespread chances for precipitation. Friday will be the more active day of precipitation. Snowfall is forecasted across the mountains, northeast, and central New Mexico. Rainfall is forecasted in spotty areas around the northwest and south central New Mexico.

The low pressure system will be moving out of the state by Saturday evening. Sunday through early next week will showcase calmer, warmer, and drier weather. Locally breezy conditions are forecasted to be the most active weather seen through early next week.
