LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – One of Las Vegas’ most recognizable faces finally has a name.
On Thursday, the Sphere Entertainment Co. revealed that the large yellow emoji character who often graces the structure’s enormous external LED screen (or “Exosphere”) is named Orbi — presumably a take on the Latin word orbis, which means circle or sphere.
“Orbi has become a global phenomenon and cultural touchstone, captivating audiences in Las Vegas and on social media with its many expressions,” Chandra Allison, an executive with Sphere Entertainment Co., was quoted as saying in a press release.

A few months ahead of Thursday’s reveal, however, Nexstar’s KLAS had already reported that the character’s name was likely Orbi, having found hints on marketing materials. Thursday’s press release indeed confirmed the station’s suspicions.
Now that Orbi is out there, the Sphere Entertainment Co. is wasting no time in monetizing his likeness. The group announced that Orbi also has his own merch collection featuring t-shirts, hats and baby onesies.
“The e-commerce site is a way for fans around the world to connect with Orbi and Sphere via official branded merchandise, further extending the reach and visibility of Sphere’s brand,” Allison said.
Orbi first debuted on the Exosphere in 2023, before the Sphere was officially opened to the public. Since that time, he’s been spotted sleeping, melting in the heat, dressed up for Halloween, and even boasting that he voted in the 2024 presidential election.
