ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Gallegos Family has made New Mexico high school wrestling history, as they become the first family to have state champions from a father, son, and now daughter.
“It just excites you, it’s like the very best feeling as a father and as a family. I mean, it’s not just my job, but it’s the whole family and all of us have sacrificed,” said Rey Gonzales.
Rey Gallegos was the state champion in 1998 and 1999 for West Las Vegas, and his son Lorenzo Gallegos, who is a Volcano Vista junior, won state championships in 2023 and 2024. The state title trifecta was completed at this year’s state championships as Esperanza Gallegos, who is a freshman at Volcano Vista, won the 100 LBS State title.
“It felt amazing, you know I worked hard and it paid off, and all like the extra hours I put into it. It was just a surreal feeling and it feels nice to have a whole family of state champs,” said Esperanza Gallegos.
“It’s not just going to end with me and my sister. We have 11 siblings and I am hoping to pave the path for them so not only can they be state champions as themselves, but as a team as well, and then also nationally rank them as well and overall get them better as humans and wrestlers,” said Lorenzo Gallegos.
