(NEXSTAR) – An American has been taken into custody in Paris after a newborn baby was allegedly thrown from the window of a hotel in the city’s 20th arrondissement, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office said.
Witnesses reported the incident early on Monday morning, France’s Le Parisien news outlet reported. The baby was treated for injuries but ultimately died, a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office confirmed in a statement shared with Nexstar.
The American was taken to a hospital for a post-delivery operation where she was placed in custody, according to the spokesperson’s statement.
The prosecutor’s office has not officially identified the American national but said she was “part of a group of young adults traveling in Europe.”
The incident is being investigated as a homicide, according to the spokesperson.
