ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It may not have been pretty to start, but the Lobo women’s basketball team picked up a win on Saturday. After trailing two-win Utah State by five entering the final quarter, New Mexico came back to win 73-65.
In the opening quarter, UNM committed ten turnovers and only made three shots on 21.% shooting. In total, New Mexico ended the game with 22 turnovers.
Despite the poor ball security, the Lobos were able to hang around thanks to their efforts on the glass. UNM outrebounded the Aggies 53-38.
In the second half UNM stepped it up on defense and clawed back into the game. Viane Cumber exploded for 17 second half points. She ended the game with 20.
“I just had to keep believing in myself and taking the shots that I know I can make,” Cumber said postgame. “I was happy that they went in and happy that we got the crowd involved and that really helped us move forward and get the win that we needed.”
In addition two Cumber, the two other Lobos who were honored on senior day had solid outings. Hulda Joaquim finished with a game-high 10 points. Amhyia Morland played 16 valuable minutes and ended at +11. Full stats.
UNM is now 16-12 on the season and 9-6 inside the Mountain West. Up next is a road game at Wyoming on Wednesday.
