ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Polar bears inside the ABQ BioPark were in the spotlight Saturday, all for International Polar Bear Day. The BioPark’s polar bear Kiska was on hand enjoying his pool and habitat toys as part of the celebration.
The day is held during this time of year to coincide with when cubs and their moms are normally in their dens, which is the most vulnerable time for a polar bear’s life. Zoo staff says there are plenty of things we can do to help preserve polar bears’ habitats.
“We can make a difference by lowering the amount of electricity we use, not idling our cars as often, purchasing sustainable seafood,” says Tori Fox, Science Education Coordinator for the ABQ BioPark. “There’s many ways we can help polar bears and that way we can hopefully have polar bears for many generations to come.”
Visitors were able to learn more about polar bears with discovery stations, a keeper chat, and hands-on activities.
