CHIMAYO, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico’s elected officials in Congress are wondering why it is taking so long to replace a burned-down post office.
Friday marks two years since a fire destroyed the post office in Chimayo, forcing residents to get their mail from another location.

Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández, along with senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján have sent a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, urging the United States Postal Service to re-establish a permanent location.
“We know that rural post offices are the lifeblood of the community. They don’t just deliver mail. They deliver medication. They deliver checks. But they also create a community where people gather to share stories as they pick up their mail,” said Teresa Leger Fernandez (D-New Mexico)
Congresswoman Leger Fernandez said about 3,000 people depend on a physical post office in Chimayo.
