Cooler and wetter weather this week

Spring like temperatures continue for most of the state this afternoon. An upper level trough moving in will lead to active weather.

A cold front moved through northeastern New Mexico early this morning. This cold front dropped temperatures for northeastern New Mexico by several degrees. Areas like Clayton may struggle to make it above freezing this afternoon.

An upper level trough continues to make its way towards New Mexico this afternoon. The trough will be accelerating winds across the surface this afternoon. Gusts upwards of 40 mph are possible across portions of southwest New Mexico. Additionally, very dry air is in place over the western regions of the state. This has led to an elevated risk for fire in southwestern New Mexico. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday February 11th for southwestern New Mexico.

The upper level trough will also be bringing snowfall to the northern mountains. Upwards of 9 inches is possible across the peaks. Due to the anticipated snowfall, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for portions of the northern mountains until Wednesday February 12th.

Later this week a stronger storm system is expected to move into New Mexico. The storm will draw up fair amounts of moisture across the state. This storm system will also bring a mix of rain and snow to New Mexico Friday through Saturday afternoon. The best chances for snow are in northern New Mexico and the high elevation. Rain chances are possible in the valleys.
