Man found guilty of murdering transgender woman in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A jury convicted 30-year-old Jose Mendoza-Espinoza of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence for killing a transgender woman in 2023. Mendoza-Espinoza told the court he killed Sherlyn Marjorie by kneeling on her throat after she attempted to extort money and attacked him after he refused to pay her.

According to the criminal complaint, he was in a relationship with Marjorie for years but Mendoza-Espinoza told investigators he committed the crime because she was threatening to tell his wife about the ongoing affair.
