ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Rian Gonzales will never forget February 6, 2025. The six foot three senior guard made a state record 17 three-point buckets in the Hawks’ 98-45 victory over the Piedra Vista Panthers. Gonzales, who is on the equivalent of an all-star team with Volcano Vista, scored 62 points in the game which ties him for 6th best all time.
“I mean, I realized after that last shot, that 17th shot. And, I mean, just a strange feeling. It didn’t feel real. It felt like a dream, said Gonzales. Volcano Vista head coach Greg Brown was happy to see Gonzales hit the mark. “This is one where we got to rally around Rian,” said Brown. “Rian has always been one of those guys that have been team first. He definitely has this in him. This wasn’t a fluke. This wasn’t a lucky night.”
With the win, Volcano Vista kept their district one record spotless at 6-0. The defending champions of Class 5A Hawks also improved to 20-2 overall. The Hawks are back on the floor Wednesday at Rio Rancho.
