Cooler and wetter weather on the way next week

Warm weather will continue through the weekend across New Mexico. A change in our weather pattern will bring wetter and cooler weather next week.

It has once again been another very warm afternoon across New Mexico with several record high temperatures getting broken today. It’s also been very windy for parts of the state, especially northeastern New Mexico. Wind gusts have been measured as high as 40 to 60 mph. Winds will die down quickly this evening, but will continue to be breezy along and east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains potentially through Saturday morning.

Breezy to locally windy weather will return each afternoon this weekend, but it won’t be nearly as windy as today. Temperatures will continue to feel like spring with warm weather sticking around for most of the state Saturday and Sunday. Although Sunday will be a little cooler after a weak cold front moves into the state.

Next week is looking cooler and wetter. Another cold front Sunday night will bring in cooler temperatures Monday. Temperatures will continue to get cooler everyday through the middle of next week. Wednesday will be the coolest day with some parts of New Mexico actually falling below average. Rain and mountain snow will return to northern New Mexico as early as Monday. A backdoor cold front will bring a mix of rain and snow into northeast New Mexico Tuesday and Wednesday, while the rest of the northern half of the state will see isolated rain showers and mountain snow. We briefly see some drier weather return Thursday afternoon before another storm moves in Friday. Temperatures will warm up Friday afternoon as the approaching storm increases westerly winds. However, it will likely get cooler next weekend as more widespread chances for rain and snow return.
