New NMDOH web series aims to help teens develop healthy communication habits

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) –  In a 24/7 world overrun by social media likes, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH), is now behind a new video series teaching teens how to make healthy relationships with their friends and themselves.

“It’s so important because relationships are part of our day-to-day, and it’s not something that everyone just intuitively knows how to do,” said Dr. Katherine Grill. But, the New Mexico Department of Health, says it’s worth repeating, especially these days.

Relationships can be difficult to navigate, especially for young people. To empower teens, NMDOH is launching a new web series called ‘Building Healthy Habits’ supporting people in how to develop strong, healthy connections in their lives.

“So, really, we’re not just educating them about these different concepts when it comes to relationships and mental health, but we want to leave them with the strategies because it’s not just about consumption of these YouTube videos. It’s really then about taking that information and applying it in their lives,” continued Dr. Grill.

The series is hosted by Dr. Grill… alongside Lobo legend and former NBA star Kenny Thomas, touching on topics like self-talk and trust. The duo also shares some simple strategies.

“So, it’s not a matter of just, ‘Hey, listen to Kenny Thomas.’ It’s a matter of us being able to give those resources and tools for the community. And it’s not just the kids. It’s a matter of all ages and people don’t know about these resources,” shared Thomas.

The series is broken down into four parts, including friendships, self, family, and romantic relationships. They hope it helps encourage young people to share their feelings more openly.
