NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – With 2024’s tax season around the corner, the Taxation and Revenue Department has announced key dates and resources for New Mexicans.
Who needs to file taxes in New Mexico?
Every New Mexico resident, person with income from a New Mexico source, and person required to file a federal income tax return must also file a New Mexico Personal Income Tax Return, also known as “Form PIT-1.”
When should state and federal taxes be filed?
New Mexicans can submit their 2024 Personal Income Tax returns starting on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025. Both federal and state tax returns are due on Tuesday, Apr. 15, but the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers options to extend that deadline for those who need more time, and New Mexico follows IRS rules for extensions.
Where can state taxes be filed?
New Mexico tax returns can be filed online for free using the state’s Taxpayer Access Point (TAP) website. Another option is to submit the state return online via any of New Mexico’s accepted software providers (TurboTax, FreeTaxUSA, TaxWise, etc.). Tax returns can also be physically mailed in on paper. However, the state recommends using one of the electronic filing methods, as that process tends to be quicker and more accurate.
