ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating after a man died during an encounter with the Albuquerque Police Department Thursday night.
APD says officers responded to an apartment complex near Indian School and San Pedro around 7 p.m. Police say a man called 911 and said he was armed with a knife and that people were shooting at him. The man said he had schizophrenia and he was going to kill someone.
Officers arrived on scene and found the man arguing with other people in the parking lot. APD says officers tried to take the man into custody and use force to place him in handcuffs. They say said during the struggle the man lost consciousness. Police attempted life-saving measures until rescue personnel arrived on scene. Officials say the man was later declared dead.
The incident is being investigated as an in-custody death because the man died while officers were attempting to arrest him.
