NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Health is encouraging people to embrace dry January. Dry January is a global public health initiative to remove alcohol from your diet and start off a new year with healthier habits.
NMDOH said the trend has major health benefits. The department said going alcohol-free even for a month can lead to better sleep, weight loss, improved mood and energy, healthier eating, saving money, and a reduced risk of cancer.
“Dry January can be a great time for self-assessment to reflect on how much one drinks, the reasons for drinking, and also look to adopt healthier decisions surrounding alcohol use in general,” said Rebecca Neudecker, the section manager for the Office of Alcohol Misuse Prevention in a press release.
To have a successful dry January, NMDOH offered tips like removing all alcohol from your home, planning alcohol-free events, and being kind to yourself if you do end up drinking.
