Raton MainStreet Executive Director Brenda Ferri is beaming ear to ear and the excitement and enthusiasm she has is infectious after Raton Mainstreet was awarded, “the prestigious Great American Main Street Award which recognizes communities for their excellence in comprehensive preservation-based commercial district revitalization.”
Ferri noted that this was the first time that Raton has applied for the award and only the second time a New Mexico town has received the award. Silver City received the award in 2011. She also noted that this year is the 40th anniversary of the New Mexico Main Street organization.

In the press release provided by Main Street America it was noted that;

“Raton MainStreet’s remarkable revitalization efforts showcase the power of preservation-based economic development,” said Erin Barnes, President and CEO at Main Street America. “With decisive leadership and a community-focused commitment to historic preservation, they have not only honored Raton’s storied past but also built the foundation for a vibrant and resilient community for generations to come.”

Raton MainStreet’s work on the revitalization of First Street was the project that they used in their presentation for the award. The $2.2 million project included upgrades to infrastructure and street scapes and help revitalize three blocks in the downtown district. It was a collaboration between Raton Mainstreet, the City of Raton and New Mexico MainStreet to secure the funding and make the project happen. Today Historic First Street is often the scene of parades, music festivals and other celebrations.

The press release went on to say;

“Employing the Main Street Approach™, Raton MainStreet also worked closely with the City of Raton and other state agencies to support preservation-based economic development efforts, resulting in the restoration and rehabilitation of several historic sites, including the El Raton Theatre (ca. 1930), Yucca Hotel (ca. 1929), and Shuler Theater (ca. 1913). Since 2021, Raton MainStreet has provided over $25,000 in grants to 29 local businesses, 19 of which were women-owned, to help businesses with much needed repairs and updates.”

“We are deeply honored to be recognized as a 2025 GAMSA winner,” said Brenda Ferri, Executive Director at Raton MainStreet. “This award is a validation of the dedication of our board members, volunteers, business and property owners, and local and state partners who together have worked tirelessly to revitalize downtown Raton. Through collaboration and the Main Street Approach, we’ve been able to successfully transform Raton into a thriving community, while honoring our rich history.”

Ferri is looking forward to new projects including the restoration of the train depot in downtown Raton. She said we have to continue our work going on all four cylinders. This summer Raton MainStreet is hosting the International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally and the big event over the Labor Day weekend is the Gate City Musical Festival.

Congratulations to Raton MainStreet for their work in bettering Raton.
