[1] Sam Bregman announces campaign for governor of New Mexico – Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman is launching his campaign for governor of New Mexico. Bregman began his political career as a member of the Albuquerque City Council from 1995 to 1999. He later served as chair of the state Democratic Party. In 2023, Bregman was appointed as Second Judicial District Attorney by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, he was then elected to the position in November 2024.
[2] Suspects facing charges in connection to shooting death of 2-year-old released – The four suspects accused in the recent death of a two-year-old are being released from custody while awaiting trial. According to police, the child’s mother, Amillia Garcia, along with Angelica Lucero, Angel Cordova, and Angel Morales were all inside an apartment when the shooting happened. Garcia told detectives she was in another room when she heard a loud bang. She went into the living room and discovered her son with a gunshot wound. Police believe the toddler got a hold of Garcia’s gun and accidentally shot himself. Judge Bruce Fox ultimately decided to release Garcia and the three other suspects until trial.
[3] Hottest weather of season with record temperatures – Record heat will start moving into New Mexico Friday. More record high temperatures will break Saturday and Sunday across the state. A stretch of record breaking heat begins Friday, with several locations seeing those temperatures Friday afternoon. It gets even hotter across the state Saturday, with most locations breaking or getting close to breaking record highs. Winds also pick up Saturday afternoon with westerly gusts up to 40 mph.
[4] Gizmo building in downtown ABQ being turned into art workspace and housing – A historic fixture in downtown Albuquerque that’s been vacant for years is getting new life. The building that was once a JC Penny before turning into the Gizmo Clothing Store, eventually closed in 2018. The founder and director of the art gallery “Sanitary Tortilla Factory” bought the building. They say it will soon become a gallery and exhibition space called “Print Manufacturing.” The new owner is also planning for re-entry housing for previously incarcerated artists.
[5] Albuquerque Public Schools hosts 17th annual Native American Fashion Show – The runway turned into a celebration of culture and heritage Thursday night as Albuquerque Public Schools’ students flaunted traditional regalia in the district’s 17th annual Native American Fashion Show. The event featured beadwork, intricate cultural designs, and outfits passed down through generations. All modeled and designed by students, proud to represent their roots.
