SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) — National Poetry Month began back in 1996, but for the City of Santa Fe, it feels more official than ever. This year, Mayor Alan Webber has made a poetry proclamation declaring all Santa Fe residents to be poets.
According to Webber, the idea came from Santa Fe’s Arts & Culture Director Chelsey Johnson and Tommy Archuleta, the seventh poetry Laureate. To celebrate poetry month, Santa Fe libraries are hosting poetry workshops.

“Santa Fe Public Library is celebrating the art and beauty of poetry all through the month of April,” Library Division Director Margaret M. Neill said in a press release. “We’re excited to present programs in partnership with talented poets and writers such as Wellington, Archuleta, and Golden.”
The free workshops are being held at La Farge, Main, and Southside libraries through April. Registration is online.
National Poetry Month was originally established by the Academy of American Poets to highlight the legacy and ongoing achievement of poets.
