Record heat moves into New Mexico starting Friday

Record heat will start moving into New Mexico Friday. More record high temperatures will break Saturday and Sunday across the state.

Warmer weather continues to move into the western half of New Mexico Thursday afternoon, with high temperatures climbing into the 90s in southwest New Mexico and the 80s up to Farmington. Eastern New Mexico is sitting a couple degrees cooler today thanks to a weak backdoor cold front that moved in last night. That front will push through the central mountain chain later tonight, bringing east winds up to 30 mph into the Rio Grande Valley. The winds will die down before heading out the door Friday morning and the cold front will have no effect on temperatures Friday afternoon.

A stretch of record breaking heat begins Friday, with several locations seeing those temperatures Friday afternoon. It gets even hotter across the state Saturday, with most locations breaking or getting close to breaking record highs. Winds also pick up Saturday afternoon with westerly gusts up to 40 mph. This will bring an elevated fire danger across the state. Slightly cooler air moves into western New Mexico Sunday afternoon, but temperatures will still be well-above average with more record heat in eastern parts of the state. Winds pick up slightly Sunday afternoon too bringing another day of an elevated fire danger.

Temperatures slowly cool off next week, but will stay above average for almost all of New Mexico. A couple spotty showers and sprinkles will be possible Tuesday afternoon across the state, but any accumulations will stay very light. Warmer weather again moves in starting next Wednesday.
