DOJ: New Mexico man pleads guilty to stabbing, hitting ex-girlfriend with vehicle

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — A New Mexico man has pled guilty to assault after he stabbed his ex-girlfriend and struck her with his vehicle, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico. Tyrell Lee Johnson, 29, of Shiprock, is facing up to ten years in prison and three years of supervised release.

Court records show Jane Doe and her sister were stopped at a construction zone when Johnson went up to their vehicle on Nov. 2, 2024. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Johnson struck Jane Doe in the head, stabbed her in the abdomen, and hit her with his vehicle as he fled. She suffered a concussion, as well as bruises, abrasions, and an abdominal wound.

Navajo police found Johnson’s vehicle in Cudei. He was arrested after a quick pursuit. A black folding knife was found in his possession. Officers confirmed there was no alcohol in his system. Johnson is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation.

The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case along with the Navajo Nation Department of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Investigations. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark A. Probasco.
