ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Vortex Theatre and the National Hispanic Cultural Center are getting ready for the premier of, “Lion Island” based on a novel by Margarita Engle.

The play tells the story of Antonio Chuffat, a civil rights activist of Cuban, African and Chinese decent in the late 1800s in Cuba. Chuffat comes to realize the benefits of being a free-born man and embarks on a civil rights movement aimed at freeing indentured servants. The play will be held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The play runs April 3 – 13 with shows Friday’s and Saturday’s at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s at 1 p.m. For more information and to buy tickets for a show, click here.
