Man arrested in connection to shots fired at southwest Colorado recreation center

DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE) — A man was arrested on Wednesday in southwest Colorado after police say he fired shots at a local recreation center. Joe Brinkerhoff, 76, of Durango, is being charged with illegal discharge of a firearm, according to the Durango Police Department.

Police say the suspect fired into the front-facing window of Durango Recreation Center at about 12:40 a.m. The front entry window was destroyed. This was discovered by employees while they were opening the center Wednesday morning. Police received the call at 5:23 a.m.

Brinkerhoff was identified as the suspect through video surveillance. According to the Durango Police Department, Brinkerhoff had been asked to leave the property due to a prior incident, and his rec center privileges were suspended.

The investigation continues. Police say there is no further danger to the public. As far as the rec center goes, the lap pool is open, but the hot tub and leisure pool are closed for now.
