ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Over 1,200 high school and college students crowded into Central New Mexico Community College’s main campus, trying to earn their spot in a national competition. Students put their expertise to the test on Friday for the SkillsUSA competition. Thursday’s contest was focused on public speaking and terminology, but Friday’s contest was all about getting your hands dirty.
“Everything from welding, plumbing, your traditional trades. But we also have competitions in other areas, like criminal justice. Today is the first time we’re hosting the competition for early childhood development. We have digital media, culinary arts, cybersecurity. A wide range of skills-based competitions,” said Andrea Sisneros-Wichman, Senior Director of Programs, CNM Ingenuity.
Winners of the competition here in New Mexico will punch their ticket to the national competition in Atlanta, happening in June.
