“We made a special $3.21 bowl, we’re giving out special $3.21 socks, just really trying to hype of awareness about Down Syndrome,” said Kayla Scheer, co-owner of Rush Bowls, a smoothie shop in northeast Albuquerque.

For the Scheer Family, the condition hits close to home. Their youngest daughter, Aria, was born with it. “She’s a hoot and a half,” Scheer said. “We love her, so blessed by her.”

The Scheer Family hopes events like this create a safe space for those with Down Syndrome but also expand people’s knowledge about the disorder. “We want to make sure that anybody with a disability feels welcome in the community, whether they’re a staff member, or a client,” Scheer explained.

The shop also gave out free blue and yellow socks- the colors that represent Down Syndrome awareness- with a purchase of a bowl. According to the shop, all of its earnings from the event are going to go to the Rio Grande Syndrome Network. It’s a local non-profit that works to bring awareness to the condition and provides families with resources and services.

“We love supporting our local Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network,” Scheer said.
