Heightened religious sentiment during the Civil War led to a movement to include the words “In God Our Trust” from Francis Scott Key’s poem on our coinage. The words were altered by the Treasury Secretary to “In God We Trust’ and included on the 2-cent coin. In 1956, President Eisenhower signed a bill to include the words on paper currency. That phrase has appeared on our currency since. For more information on the Albuquerque Coin Club, click here.
