City celebrates new bike lanes along Central Ave. in downtown Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Bicyclists in the metro now have newly-striped bike lanes when getting around downtown Albuquerque. The Central Ave. bike lane was celebrated on Sunday with a ribbon cutting ceremony— as bicyclists and supporters of the project got to ride on it for the first time. In addition to the newly-striped lanes, which run along Central Ave. from First to Eighth St.– the project also brings some other additions, including new bike lane buffers, signage, and other safety improvements.

Led by Albuquerque City Councilor Joaquin Baca, the project is the latest completion in a slate of projects he has pushed for in the heart of the city. “She said ‘Aren’t you concerned that you’re going to bring more pedestrians and more bikers down here to Central?’ And I was like ‘yes. That’s the point. That’s what we’re trying to achieve here,” said Councilor Baca.

He said this project directly links cyclists to east and west downtown— and would complement the future Rail Trail project.
