ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Several measures were approved in Albuquerque City Council Monday night including a way for the city to address nuisance properties. According to the city, the new ordinance gives further definition to acts that make a property considered a nuisance, and streamlines the enforcement process. Those opposed to the ordinance say it’s a way for the city to shut down properties they don’t like at any time. Some changes were made to the original proposal, such as not deeming a property a nuisance simply because the owner allows a homeless person to camp there.
Council also approved a measure that gives millions of dollars to some low-income residents in the International District and Albuquerque’s West Side. Students at Title 1 schools in those areas and their families would be the recipients of the funds. The families are expected to get $750 a month for three years. Funding for the measure is coming from cannabis tax revenue.
