NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Justice has issued an opinion on the legality of a mobile app that allows New Mexico players to play state lottery games online. The governor has asked Attorney General Raul Torrez to look into the legality of the Jackpocket App, asking if the app violated several state laws.
In his response, Torrez and his office say Jackpocket is, in effect, selling lottery tickets for a profit and needs written authority from the state’s lottery authority to do so. The company recently sent out an email to its customers, saying they have shut down service in New Mexico.
The app has also received backlash from other states, with KRQE’s sister station in Austin reporting the Texas Lottery Commission recently banned lottery courier services, such as Jackpocket.
