Albuquerque, state leaders gather to celebrate Main Library’s 50th

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The main branch of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Public Library is celebrating 50 years of sharing knowledge with the community. The library first opened in 1975.

On Saturday, the city’s first lady, a state representative, and dozens of proud New Mexicans showed up to the celebration, saying the main library has been a cornerstone of free literacy and community engagement. “Like our first lady, I grew up in this library. I’m a native New Mexican born and raised in the north valley and, like so many people who are probably in this room, I spent countless hours running around the halls of this library,” says Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D- New Mexico).

Library officials say it’s not just the books that have traveled through time, but much of the furniture has remained the same since the building first opened.
