ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Wednesday will be day three for the trial of two men accused of shooting and killing an 11-year-old and injuring his cousin outside Isotopes Park in 2023.

Tuesday was an emotional day in court in which the victim’s mother told the jury what happened that night. In September of 2023, Maria Villegas was leaving an Isotopes game with her sons and niece when their truck was shot up.

Froylan Villegas, 11, died at the scene. His cousin, Tatiana Villegas, had gunshot wounds and broken ribs and was left permanently paralyzed.

Tuesday in court, prosecutors brought a homicide detective to the stand who attributed tips from Crime Stoppers that led their investigation into Nathen Garley, Jose Romero, and Daniel Gomez. The detective said the men were trying to confront another man from a rival gang after the game.

Romero and Garley face a long list of charges, including first-degree murder.

Gomez was also expected to be a part of this trial, but his case has since been separated. He is expected to take the witness stand in this trial.

The trial is scheduled to last through Friday.
