ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s one of the oldest parts of Albuquerque, but a group of city councilors say the Atrisco neighborhood just west of the river should be targeted for newer development. Three west side councilors are looking to help make a plan to fix up areas along Central around Atrisco, with the idea of bringing newer business and green space.
“We want to get everybody in alignment working toward a common vision,” said Albuquerque City Councilor Joaquin Baca.
Just west of the Rio Grande on Route 66, the Atrisco neighborhood goes back generations. But it’s also an area some city leaders think is in dire need of reinvestment. Especially when you look nearby.
“On the east side of the river, you’ve got the BioPark, you’ve got Tingley, you’ve got destinations, even the bosque is where everybody goes to hike and walk,” Councilor Baca said. “If you go to the west side of the river, not so much.”
Baca, alongside fellow councilors Klarissa Peña, and Louie Sanchez, are among those now pushing for an Atrisco area master plan. Their idea calls for a plan covering the area west of the Rio Grande to 51st, south to Sunset Gardens Boulevard, and then up north near areas around Pat Hurley Park. Councilor Baca says the plan could help create a more cohesive approach to redevelopment, as Bernalillo County has also looked to fix up nearby areas.
“Where we can create some green space, and park space on both sides of Central, along the river and also some economic development,” Councilor Baca explained.
He’s hoping the plan can help make a road map to fix up parts of the bosque on the west side of the river, upgrade sidewalks and streets, and also establish a process for how to redevelop vacant lots. Baca says key components include cultural, recreational, and environmental awareness.
“Just because you live on the west side of the river doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have access to a nice park,” Baca added. “The bosque needs a lot of work in that area.”
City councilors are expected to vote on the plan this Wednesday.
