Police officer and athlete from New Mexico join to carry torch at Special Olympics 

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A member of New Mexico law enforcement will be heading to Italy next month to take part in ceremonies for the Special Olympics.

Farmington Police Sergeant Travis Spruell has been chosen to join the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run at the Special Olympics world Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Spruell will be joined by athlete Shelby Peterson, from Gallup. The two will serve as guardians of the prestigious Flame of Hope, carrying the flame across multiple Italian cities from March 1 – 8. The torch will be lit in Athens, Greece on February 25. On March 8, the flame will reach the opening ceremony in Turin. Peterson will be the first Native American woman from New Mexico representing the United States and the Navajo Nation at the event.
