ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque is helping address food insecurity in the International District. After the closure of Walmart and Walgreens along San Mateo Blvd., residents in the area are facing an increase in challenges accessing fresh food. The city has four health and social services centers in the metro including one in the International District.
The centers provide vital support, including food distribution, utility assistance, clothing assistance, and other essential services. “I want to encourage the community that there is no reason for you not to take advantage of these services. They are there for you in times of hardships, for them to be able to make sure that you have a basic need met in your household,” said Director Gilbert Ramirez, City of Albuqeurque Health, Housing & Homelessness Department.
Last year, the centers distributed more than 19,000 food boxes and so far this year they have done more than 700 boxes. All centers are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
